E-learning is a training that takes place through a network, /usually over the internet or a company’s or an institution’s intranet. It has its roots in the world of computer based training. Earlier, it was a concept in place to impart training to mostly technical people. However, e-learning has lately transformed into a tool widely used in both the academic and corporate world. Now as, e-learning has made inroads into school and college education, more and more students are turning to it to gain knowledge. E-learning allows people to take online courses from universities in various subjects.

As young learners today are all tech-savvy and enjoy surfing the net, e-learning is always preferred over traditional textbook reading for them. As every student today possesses a laptop/tablet or an android phone, e-learning is very convenient. Also, e-books and e-resources are cheaper 40 than textbooks and in some cases entail zero cost. Besides this, e-books do not occupy any physical space unlike the textbooks. At the same time, e-learning is also interactive learning, where a student can also participate in discussions and get his/her query answered.

Educational simulations enable learners to apply conceptual knowledge while making dry subjects engaging and enhance understanding. Lastly, learning portals and mobile e-learning also offer easy access to educational materials anytime and anywhere. Inter-personal learning on the world-wide-web or what is known as virtual classroom, is a duplicate of the real face to face classroom learning.

They provide a virtual meeting place for teachers and students, there is an attendance list, slide presentations, audio and video conferencing, application sharing and a shared whiteboard. Students are given online quizzes, projects, assignments, graded discussions, mid-semester and final examinations as a part of their assessment.

Learning on the internet has broken down all geographical barriers that prevent learning among citizens together. Thus, e-learning is the new modern concept of learning which is more appealing to the younger generation that finds it easy and fun.

However, e-learning does come with its share of drawbacks too. The concept requires learners to have access to advice of minimum specifications. Also, it is unsuitable for certain courses that require heavy inter-personal contact. Similarly, it is unsuitable for students with visual or physical impairments.

Besides, it calls for a high degree of self-discipline on the part of the students. And lastly, one must check for the authenticity and reliability of the content available on web. Hence, one must check the feasibility and suitability of e-learning for oneself before opting for this method of learning.
