Mother Teresa was one of the greatest gifts of God to mankind. She was an idol of love, com- passion and kindness. She always thought about others and spent her entire lifetime in help ing the suffering people. She was the one who brought happiness to millions of faces all over the world.
Mother Teresa was born on 26 August, 1910 in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia and was raised as a Roman catholic by her mother. Her real name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhit. She was fascinated by the stories of the lives of missionaries and was interested in serving her life for religious causes even at the age of 12. At the age of 18she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary where she learnt English.
She came to India in 1929 and started teaching in Loreto convent School in Eastern Calcutta. She served there for almost 20 years and also took her solemn vows there on 14 May1937 She enjoyed teaching children, but at the same time she was terly disappointed at seeing the plight of nearby poor colonies near her school.
It was on 10 September, 1946 that she really knew what she had to do and left the convent to serve the poor and the needy. She received a basic training in medicine in Patna and embarked on the noble way to help others.
She started an open air slum school and was soon joined by many volunteers Financial support too started coming in from allover the countryThe government also helped her in her cause, thus increasing the scope of her work.
She started her own order “The Missionaries of Charity” in 1950 to take care of the suffering people. It started as a small initiative but grew rapidly At present, the Order is served with over 4000 sisters running orphanages and charity centres worldwide.
She also converted an old Indian abandoned temple into Kalighat, the Home of the Pure Heart. She had profound mercy and pity for the suffering When she could not help much, she ensured that the lepers at least died with peace and dignity She worked extensively for leprosy affected people and built a self-sup porting colony near Titagarh.
Mother Teresa has been recognised and honoured in various parts of the world. She was awarded Padma Shri in 1962 and was awarded India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna She also won the Nobel Peace Prize for her extra ordinary work. She is one of the most admired Women of all time and has touched every human being on this planet one way or another.
On 13 March 1987, Mother Teresa abdicated from the head of Missionaries of Charity. She left for heaven on 5 September, 1997. Though she is no more in this world but she will always be re membered as the lady who cared and loved each and every person equally She has left a beautiful message behind her that faith and compassion can heal the world.

Among the greatest men and women who have made a mark in the history of mankind, one of the greatest was Mother Teresa, the like of whom is not likely to be found for generations to come. The real name of Mother Teresa was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born on August 26, 1910 at Skopje in Yogoslavia in Europe. In 1928 at the age of 18 she left for Ireland, where she joined the Loreto congregation, an organisation engaged in raissionary work.
It was there in Ireland that young Agnes learnt that the sisters of Loreto were engaged in missionary work in Bengal in India. She made up her mind to do missionary work to mitigate the sufferings of the needy people and those others in distress and a year later in 1929 she sailed to India for the noble cause. । Agnes taught for some years in the schools of Loreto Congregation and finally became the Principal of St. Agnes High School for girls in Kolkata. ।
There was a large slum area near the school where she taught. She saw the frightful condition of the dwellers from very close quarters. She was deeply moved and her heart cried within herself to do something for the suffering humanity.
In 1948, she got the Indian citizenship. Now, the main vocation of hers was to collect the forlorn and forsaken, homeless human wrecks rotting on the streets, the destitute, the handicapped and others. She brought them with her and for the sake of their survival, she begged from door to door for food, caring not a bit for her personal comfort or social dignity that even any average human being would think of. She considered welfare of others above her own and was ready to make any sacrifice for others.

Agnes borrowed the word “Teresa from a little known saint and it was by this name that she came to be known all over the world.
Now, she is lovingly called “Mother Teresa”. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. In 1980, Bharat Ratna, the highest Indian Civilian Award was bestowed on her. For promoting the cause of friendship among the people and for doing great service to the poor and the needy she got the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1990.
In 1991, this “Angel of Peace as she was being hailed, fell ill with pneumonia. This led to her prolonged illness and later death by cardiac arrest on September 5, 1997. She was laid to rest at Mother House in Kolkata. She is destined to go down as one of the greatest personalities in history. She will, Indeed, be remembered for all times to come. She had already appointed Sister Nirmala as her successor. The latter is carrying on Mother Teresa’s work with equal devotion and diligence. M other Teresa was born as Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxiu in 1910, in Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia. At an early age, she had the inner call to be a num and serve the poor. At the age of 18, she joined a group of nuns in Ireland. After a few months of training with the Sisters of Loreto, she travelled to India. She took her formal religious vows in 1931, and chose to be named after the patron saint of missionaries St Terese. She began by working as a teacher in । India, however the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression in her, and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”.
The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to look after. Mother Teresa believed that serving others was a key principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ and once said, “Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into ‘action, and that action is service.”
There were two Crucial events she faced in India. The first was the Bengal famine of 1943 and the second was the Hindu/Muslim violence in 1946 – before the partition of India. In 1948, she left the Convent to live full time amongst the poorest of Calcutta. She chose to wear a white Indian Sari, with blue trimmings – out of respect for the traditional Indian dress. For many years, Mother Teresa and a small band of fellow nuns survived on minimal income and food, often having to beg for funds. But, slowly her efforts with the poorest were noted and appreciated by the local community and Indian politicians.
In 1052, she opened her first home for the dying, which allowed people to die with dignity. Mother Teresa often spent time with the elderly and in their last stages. It was appreciated as it allowed many neglected people to die while being cared for by someone. with time, her work expanded and missionaries were opened verse as. In 1965, the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI. । In the 1960s, the life of Mother Teresa was first brought to a wider public attention by Malcolm Muggeridge, who wrote a book and produced a documentary called “Something Beautiful for God”. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for work undertaken in the struggle to OverCOme poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace.
She didn’t attend the ceremonial banquet, but asked that the $192,००० fund be given to the poor. In her later years, Mother Teresa was more active in Western countries. She even commented, that though the West was materially prosperous, there was often a spiritual poverty.”
In the last twenty years of her life, Mother Teresa suffered from many health problems but continued her mission to serve the underprivileged. Until her very last illness she was active in travelling around the world to the different branches of “The ‘Missionaries of Charity”, Following Mother Teresa’s death, the Vatican began the process of beatification, which is the second step on the way to canonisation and sainthood.
