Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet, philosopher, a great musician and a great , Social reformer. He was given the title ‘Gurudev’ as Mahatma Gandhi called him the greatest poet of India. Tagore was born in a well known rich Bengal family on 70 May 1861 . His father Maharishi Devendra Nath Tagore was a big Zamindar.
He got his primary education at Kolkata. He learnt Sanskrit, Bangla, Grammar and Astronomy from his father. He started writing poems from a very early age. He went to London also for Studies. Rabindranath Tagore was born with a passion for poetry in Benga and English. poetry.
He wrote At first, nobody paid attention towards him But his well known poem ‘Gitanjali which is a collection of songs, him provided Nobel Prize, in 1913. Gitanjali is translated in many languages. In 1912 he changed it to a university. It is called Vishwa Bharti’. He had faced many family misfortunes. His wife died in her early age. His daughter also died in very early age. His father died in 1905 and his youngest son died in 1907. Rabindranath Tagore was one of the greatest poet, author, songwriter, philosopher, artist, and educator known for his work, especially in Bengali literature. He was also a cultural reformer and modernised the Bangla art by rejecting the rigidity of form and style. With his phenomenal work ‘Gitanjali, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1013. Tagore was born on 7 May, 1861 in Calcutta in a big wealthy family.
Tagore was not a fan of formal classroom education system and when he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish it. Tagore started to compose poems at the age of eight and wrote his first short story and dramas when he was only 16. His first book, A Collection of Poems’, was published when he was 17 years old. In his youth, Tagore managed his ancestral estates along with barely writing. During this time, he was largely moved to see the poverty prevailing in the country which increased his interest in social reforms.
He believed in what he quoted, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. Ia woke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” With his translations of some of his poems, he became rapidly known in the West. Soon he started touring continents to lecture and took tours of friendship.
For the world, he became the voice of India’s spiritual heritage; and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan, where he tried his idea of education. From time to time, he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own visionary way. Politically active in India, Tagore was a supporter of Gandhi, but disagreed with Gandhi’s philosophy of non-cooperation.
Tagore’s collection ‘Gitanjali was translated to English in 1912, which was highly appreciated by Nobel prize-winning poet WB Yeats. Following this, he won the Nobel Prize in 1913. After earning the Nobel Prize, he toured a lot of countries and met many illustrious figures including Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Thomas Mann. HG Wells, etc. The British Crown gave him a knighthood in 1015. However, he gave back the title in 1019 as a protest against the Jallian wala Bagh Massacre in Amritsar.
Tagore, in 1917, sorted to build a new type of university. He was determined to make an institution as a connecting thread between India and the world, and a world centre for the study of humanity. He named it Visva-Bharati, its foundation stone was laid on 24 December, 1918 and was inaugurated precisely three years later.
Tagore’s works are frequently noted for their rhythmic, optimistic, and lyrical nature. Tagore wrote in the common language of the people with a hint of history and spirituality. Much of Tagore’s ideology came from the teaching of the Upanishads and from his own beliefs that God can be found through personal purity and service to others. His body of literature is deeply sympathetic for the poor and upholds universal humanistic values.
Apart from writing, Tagore was a prolific composer with 2,230 songs to his credit. One of his compositions, a Bengali patriotic song ‘Ekla Chalo Re‘ was recently included in the Bollywood movie Kahani. In the later years of his life, Tagore took up drawing and painting which found place even in the galleries of Paris among others. In 1937, he was stricken by a lengthy illness; however, he managed to keep writing till the last years of his life.
In fact many believed that he produced his finest work in the last years. Tagore died on 7 August, 1941 at the family estate, where he was born. As a patriot, he composed the music and lyrics for India’s National Anthem Jana-Gana-Mana’ and when Bangladesh became independent in 1971′ they chose Tagore’s song ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ as its National Anthem.
Tagore wrote his most important works in Bengali, but he often translated his poems into English. But as Amartya Sen says, “….anyone who knows Tagore’s poems in their original Bengali cannot feel satisfied with any of the translations…” Every year various events are organised to celebrate his birthday to pay tribute to this great Indian.
