Essay on Ozone Layer Depletion in English

The ozone layer serves as an umbrella or protective shield of the troposphere and saves the Earth’s surface from most of the ultra violet solar radiation by absorbing the ultra violet rays.

It has been found that the ozone layer over the Indo-Gangetic basin is getting depleted. This has sparked off a serious concern amonal environment experts and scientists. Because of weakening of ozone there will be less absorption of Ultra-Violet (UV) radiation and hence more UV rays will reach the Earth’s surface which would in turn increase its (Earth’s) temperature. As a result, change in climate. reduction in crop yields, disruption of marine food chains etc is noticed.

The substantial increase in the surface temperature of Earth has contributed immensely to global warming at regional and local levels. Not only has it affected human life but also had other repercussions. It has reduced crop productivity and caused an increase in sea level. Besides, the UV rays are expected to exert many other unfavourable effects.

It is believed that UV rays cause skin cancer, skin burns, melanoma, leukemia, breast cancer and eye diseases. They also injure plant proteins and cause depletion of chlorophylls and mutations. UV radiation may even damage the genetic material, DNA, leading to mutation.

The main cause for depletion of ozone is determined as excessive release of chlorine and bromine from man-made compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Besides chlorofluorocarbons, there are other Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) like methyl bromide, methyl chloroform etc. The problem with these ODS is that they are not washed back in the form of rain and in fact remain in the atmosphere for quite a long time. These are then carried to the stratosphere where they react with UV rays from the sun and hence. the result is depletion in the ozone layer.

The ozone depleting substances or ODS are mainly found in cleaning agents, coolants in refrigerators, packing material, air conditioning, aerosol spray cans etc. There are a few steps which we can take to protect the ozone layer and our precious Earth. A very easy way to control ozone depletion would be to limit the use of private vehicles as emissions result in smog which is a culprit in Ozone depletion.

Next, we should reduce the use of pesticides and use only non-CFC perfumes and body sprays. At the same time, we should use nontoxic cleaning products.

Since the world also recognises ozone depletion as a serious threat, the Montreal Protocol of the United Nations Environment Programme 1989, aimed to phase out CFC products and since then, non-CFC sprays etc have been launched in the market. Thus, if we all shed our callous attitude and do our bit to protect the ozone layer from depleting further, we can help save the existence of life on Mother Earth.
