Essay on Holi

This is one festival which is celebrated ina man ner that gives joy to everyone irrespective of age It’s a festival of colours. It s a festival of immense joy This is one of the most interesting and im portant festivals of the Hindus. It’s called Phagua or Fagua and is held in the month of Fagun and that is the month of March with the onset of Holi, the winter is finally out.

Most of the Hindu festivals have a mythical background and the festival of colours is no exception to that rule. The story about the origin of Holi festival goes like this.

Hirayakashipu had a son named Prahlad, who was a devotee of Lord VishnuHi ranyakashipu did not approve of this as he did not like Vishnu. He rather hated Vishnu and his son was a devotee. He tried his best to dissuade his son from that, but Prahlad would not relent. When persuasions did not work, Hiranyaka- shipu decided to punish Prahlad He decided to kill him but no matter how many times he tried to kill himhe did not succeed in his attempt to do so. It puzzled him no ends and finally he decided to take the help of his sister Holika.

The myth has it that her body was fireproof. She could enter any fire-pit and yet remain unscathed. Hiranyakashipu asked her to take Prahlad into her lap and sit in the fireShe did ex actly that. But as the luck would have it, Prahlad came out of it unhurt and Holika was reduced to ashes This festival of Holi is celebrated to honour that event.

The festival begins with the burning of bonfire called Holikadahan. The joy that goes with the festival is symptomatic of joy derived from Prahlads escape and Holikas death thus defeating the design of Hiranyakashipu There is another theory that goes with the celebration of this festival. It is said that Holi is the beginning of the harvesting season. When crop is ready for harvestingthe heart of the farmers is flled with joy and this joy finds expression in this festival of colours By smearing one another with colour, people share the joy of one another.

As a ritualistic gesturethe new ears of corn are roasted on the Holi fire anddistributed amongst friends and relatives as prasadThey embrace eachother and sinkalliferences they may have had So, this festival is for celebrating new hope New leaves sprout on the trees, beautiful flowers appear all around as greenery rules the roost.

On the eve of the festival, a huge fire is made at a central place where people of the area or the locality can easily congregate Heaps of wood, dungthorns and other things are collected from all over the places and burnt. Long preparations go into the making of this a success. Some times people steal articles of furniture from the neighbourhood or from those houses which are not properly looked after and burn them in this bonfire.

Therefore during this period of time people zealously guard their wooden furniture or things made of wood, lest they are stolen and burnt away as Holika DahmThis kind of thing needs to be discouraged and condemned. It is for this reason that some people think about this festival of Holi as the festival ofthe hooligans, by the hooligans and for the hooligans, and, there foremany people avoid it.

Otherwiseit’s a festival ofiov and of camaraderie Holi is also one of the most boisterous festivals of all. It really requires physical strength to live up to its boisterousness as those taking part in this festival of colours sometimes go berserk and use force to smear colours on the unwilling. This is one of the seamy sides of this festival. If cel ebrated with restraint, the festival is immensely pleasing as people jostle and bustle with sprin klersThe day usually begins with people singing and dancing in groups.

Groups of men and women generally separately move out in streets in the neighbourhood with sprinklers illed with coloured water and sprinkle colours on their friends and relatives and often on strangers too. Usually, no one minds as they all understand the significance of this. Those who move out into streets and roads know that they have to face such scenes and are mentally prepared for the Same.

It is important to remember the spirit of the festival and not get carried away by the bois terousness side of it. The underlying spirit is to enjoy the festival as it celebrates decimation of evil represented by Hiranyakashipu in the form of Holika. The festival is celebrated to mark the escape of Prahlad from the evil design of his fa ther who hatedgodliness represented by Vishnu. Sothe festival is actually the celebration of God and godliness.

This, thereforemust be the cen tre of our focus while celebrating the festival. When we sprinkle colours on otherswe share the joyBut that cannot be said when mud or garbage is thrown on a passerby or on a stranger. This gives it an ugly colour which must be shunned at all times.

This festival of Holi is celebrated with great fanfare and religious fervour in Gokul and Barsane and parts of U.P. Eforts are made to re live the Radha and Krishna episode. Holi is ro manticised in our films too. Holi is celebrated by different people in differ ent manner in different parts of the country But the underlying spirit is the same every where except at some places where we get to see its ugly form Ordinarily, it is celebrated in measured sobriety at majority of places.

People go out, sprinkle colours on one another and in dulge in merry-making. After day-long activity, they return to their homes and wash themselves clean. It usually takes days for the colours to go. In the evening, again they become busy playing with coloursbut this timeit is with dry colours called abir. Diurnal boisterousness makes way for quieter evenings when they meet one an other, apply abir and partake of sweets.
